When I filmed my video on “Dealing with Panic Attacks & Anxiety”, I didn’t think for one minute that I would have had such an overwhelming response from so many of you. It took quite a lot of courage for me to sit down and speak out loud about my experiences and difficult aspects of my life on camera. I know that all it involved was me sitting in my bedroom and talking to a piece of photographic equipment but I knew that there would be an awful lot of you watching, so at the time, the pressure was on a heap more than if I were to be showing you the products I’d enjoyed using that month. The video also made it onto YouTube’s homepage, which made the experience all the more nail-biting. Not only were my loyal viewers and subscribers hearing about my struggles with panic attacks, but now anyone that landed on the youtube homepage was also watching. Although scary, it meant that it was helping a lot more people, and this made it all the more worthwhile. I wasn’t really too sure what the feedback from the video would be, I only wanted it to be seen, and for it to have helped at least one person. After attempting to try and read through all (5,300 currently) comments, hundreds of tweets and a brimming email inbox, it became apparent that I had in fact helped an awful lot of people. I can’t even express how happy this makes me. I wish I could sit and reply to each and every one of you, but I think it would take me a lifetime, so instead I just want to say thank you for all your kind words of support and love. I have shed many a tear hearing about how some of you have changed your lives around because of my gentle push. From 12 year old girls to 40 something men, the spectrum is so wide and so many of you have been affected by my rambly video. Whether it has helped you to realise what you are experiencing is panic and anxiety, helped you to help someone close to you, given you the reassurance you aren’t alone or given you a virtual cuddle, I am so pleased that it has affected you positively in some way. If you are reading this and you are one of those people, please remember to stay strong, stay happy and keep positive. I wish you all the luck in the world with whatever it is you are battling, you can do it, and you aren’t alone.

I mean it's good to have someone that gives their personal view so that you can feel comfortable and closer with them. And you did do that and I admire you more for it. Thanks Zoe. I'm glad you created this post as recently, I've start to get really anxious every time I had to speak in front of reasonably sized groups in class. I think my anxiety really had an affect on a recent interview I had, but luckily I've been given another opportunity to interview. This post definitely made me feel better about my anxiety.

I did comment on the video at the time, but I wanted to say thanks again. The week that video went out I had been having my toughest time with panic/anxiety, so it gave me the push I needed. After watching your video I finally plucked up the courage to tell 180 of my 400 Facebook friends about my anxiety and panic attacks. Just like that. On Facebook! You made me feel not ashamed of it and so many of my friends have confided in me about how they suffer too but felt too embarrassed, and how inspired they were by me sharing my problem, and of course you. A lot of my friends watched your video and are starting to understand what anxiety is now. You are such an inspiration and in many ways remind me of myself. Take care lovely xx

  28. Hi Zoe!
I really loved your video and your blog post on Panic Attacks. It helped me understand more because my dad has it. It has made me a lot more understanding of it. Thankfully I do not have Panic Attacks but within your videos there is more lessons than that just saying yes to doing things you aren't comfortable with and taking all the chances and opportunities you are given is just exactly what helped me. So, for that! I thank you! I'm going to say yes to a lot more things.
    You are just lovely!

Your video was so inspiring, it's no wonder you got all the respons you did. It breaks my heart that someone as sweet and lovely as you suffers with such a scary, horrible thing, but you're so brave and to speak about it in front of so many people just proves that. My best friend suffers with emetophobia, the phobia of sick, and so many things that you said in your video were really helpful and relatable. So thank you, and smile! :)

It's always great to know you're not alone. I've suffered from panic attacks for about 6 years now, but recently my anxiety has gotten so much worse, to the point of having night terrors and panic attacks in the middle of ASDA (… that one was embarrassing). It did really help watching that video. You're very inspirational. : )
It's also great for people who have never suffered one to be spoken to about it. I know seeing people have a panic attack can be very shocking/confusing, so your video would really help there.

Not only through this video, but since i've started watching your videos I feel like i've found my niche. The new media technologies' tool allows to join people that suffers the same symptoms and reactions around the world, and it provoked me such an incredible warm feeling to see people sharing their thoughts, fears, and desires to fight against panic attacks or similar illness.

It was awesome to see how to take profit from sharing experiences, to help other people like that… It seemed magic to me. Thank you loads Zoe.

Thank you so much for this video Zoe. I've been struggling with negative thoughts for the past 3 months since school started again. I'm negative and anxious about everything to the point it's spun me out of control. Your video make me feel so much calmer and realize that a positive mindset is achievable. You're such an amazing person! The fact that you take control of your problems, stay happy and are such a cool person on top of all that is so inspirational. You make me realize that I'm weird or a failure or have to let anxiety/negativity ruin my life/potential. I can't really articulate how you helped me or how much it means that you speak about your anxiety/panic attacks but thank sooo much. It's amazing what your doing and really hope your successful in everything you do! :)

The feeling of 'laying yourself out to bare' (a weird expression, but to show and tell everyone what you feel and are going through) is so very brave and must have such an overwhelming feeling. Knowing that there are people from all walks of life that could be dealing with the same or similar thoughts and feelings and knowing that they are not alone, would give them a sense of hope.

I hope you deal and find peace with your struggles and knowing that your video has helped so many others, hopefully would of had a know on effect.

  79. Be proud of yourself Zoe, you're so lucky to have this amazing platform to share your knowledge and experiences with thousands of others :)
I've only been experiencing panic attacks for just over a year now and they're not totally under control, but I'm getting there. I'm 30 and it terrified thinking why is this happening to me, what have I done etc etc.
I watched your video this week and it humbled me, it made me realise that it' not just me suffering and others much younger (and older) have suffered for longer and are learning to cope and deal with it in their own way too :)
It's a struggle but there can be a positive ending if you want there to be one, it's that whole YOLO thing you mentioned, you've just gotta remember that and get on with loving and living life.
Thank you so much for your video hun, it was brave and I super appreciated it, it's a relief to know I'm not alone, much as you can feel it sometimes xx

  80. It was an amazing video and I can imagine how hard it would be to actually verbally talk about that sort of thing. Usually it buzzes around in my head but to actually start talking to so many people about it must of been daunting. I'm glad you did it though and i'm so happy it's helped people x

  81. HH

I have a question & I'm not really sure you're gonna see this, but maybe someone else who can also help me ♥.

First of all, amazing video. This made me understand the whole thing that happens in your head when you panic so much better.
I'm 15 now and I'm in grade 9 right now, but since I'm 11, dealing with presentations in front of the class got really hard for me, but also competitions or basically every situation when I have to prove myself.
Every time, it feels like this pressure gets too much to me. I start feeling weird and really hot, my head hurts, and I feel like vomiting out of all sudden. This usually lasts for hours and only gets better if I leave the room and calm down somewhere, but as soon as I get back into the same situation, it starts all over again.

I'd like to think it's just nervousness, but could it be that those things are also signs for panic-attacks? I'm not sure, since it only happens in this kind of situations and never when I'm alone at home or somewhere loud (well, I'm uncomfortable with crowded places but I never feel THAT bad), but this is really freaking me out so much. I'm scared days before and can't sleep because I'm sure it will happen again and I won't be able to stand it and I have the feeling that it's getting worse with every year that passes.

    Can anyone help? <3

    xoxo

I'm so happy to hear how many people your video has reached! I've never had panic attacks myself, although I know that with any mental illness, you MUST seek help and try to get better, but it truly does start within. When you said that you didn't want to live like that anymore, that's what stuck with me. Now whenever I face something negative, I try to remember those words and move on. So far it's helped :)
    Stay strong, Zoe!
    Love, Monica.

Hi, i don't suffer from panic attacks at all but i still watched your video all the way to the end. It was really insightful, honest and brave of you to put it online. I'm so happy there are people like you who are willing to open up and help others, it's so important that issues like these and all types of 'mental illness' are talked about, there is no shame in them.
Well done an thank you. xx

  99. The video you posted was great! I've suffered from Panic Disorder since I was 18 and used to endure upto 20 panics attacks a day. This lead to severe agoraphobia…I dropped out of Uni, where I was studying a degree in Fashin Design and moved home. It was a horrible period in my life.

CBT helped me so much, a form of therapy I would advise any ongoing panic sufferer to do! The drugs don't work, you need to speak through your thoughts and learn to rationalise them.

Now I work as the website assistant for leading own brand Aqua by Aqua & have a wonderful life of independence once again!

Its an illness that will never leave me, but with the help of others there are ways to cope and move on!

  100. This is not a panic attack, although you do sound like you are dealing with some anxiety issues related to public speaking.

This is quite normal for any person, so don't feel silly for these emotions.

The best way to cope with these situations is to be prepared for your school work and have confidence in yourself that you'll be able to do it.

It is important to get lots of rest and take deep breaths to stay calm and relaxed.

    Hattie, @peppermintplace

Thank you so much Zoe, you are such an inspiration to so many young girls out there, including myself. Thank you so much for your support! :)

  105. My twin suffers from panic attacks quite often and everything you said in the video (and earlier in one of your blog posts) was right on point! She's more comfortable when im with her if shes going somewhere because i know exactly how to act, say, or do in case she gets a panic attack, but unfortunately this limits her daily activities when im not able to accompany her; which sucks, but shes getting better. She saw your video/blog and she finds comfort and ease that shes not the only person who suffers from this horrible disease.

Thanks so much for having the courage to talk about the way you feel Zoe. I felt somewhat lost and unsure of myself for about two years now…
I'm sure millions of girls out there can relate and I know that for me, hearing someone that I truly admire talk about not letting anxiety and fear hold you back had a massive impact.
So much sooooo… that I've finally made my own blog! :D I really wanted you to know that you inspired me to just let go of the nasty thoughts inside my head and get back to writing, which I've always loved. My blog is about the troubles that hit girls in their twenties and will hopefully begin my journey back to being who I want to be :)
Thanks so much Zoe, I couldn't (and wouldn't) have taken my first step without you.

Thankyou so much Zoe for the blog post and video you posted about this, it helped me so much! I have often felt alone and always thought that I am completely the only one that has panic attacks and anxiety because I have never really seen anyone else having one which adds to the unpleasantness of them. Plus, I didn’t fully understand what they were and why I kept having them but now you've made me understand why they happen and maybe that will help me to control them in the future. For months I have stayed in my house, with a fear of pretty much everything that I just couldn’t get my head around why. I would even be petrified to go to the local shop! So, I would just like to say (again) a HUGE HUGE HUGE thankyou for sharing such an uncomfortable and personal experience/thing. You have really, honestly helped me to understand what they are, something that even my doctor could hardly do!<3

  127. Hello there Zoella,
I have just joined your many followers after going through this lovely blog of yours. It is truly beautiful! I have never been through a panic attack myself but my very close older sister has and by what I have seen it is an experience that is more DREADFUL than what I can imagine. But needless to say I think you are a very talented young lady and I see you have been made a very strong person from all that you have gone through. I hope you have a really good week ahead of you!
    Lots of Love,

I have just read your blog post and watched your Youtube video on this, I can relate where you are coming from on the panic attacks. I often get attacks due to being in a car accident 2 and a half years ago & I sometimes feel embarrassed talking about these subjects . Thank you for making this subject a little less taboo.

Your video and blog post about your anxiety helped me loads, I don't personally suffer with anxiety, I get nervous and back out of things a lot but I've never experienced an actual panic attack before but on of my best friends does, and quite badly, I never really knew how to help her and what she needed me to do so this video helped. It's really difficult for me as her friend as she suffers from other things too, and I always feel like she doesn't really appreciate what I do for her or how hard it is, and that she blames me for a lot of things. But your video did help me to understand a little more about how she must be feeling and will (and always have) try to help and just be there for her!

    Thankyou!

Also, if anyone could tell me how to follow a blod or become a member or what not, please could you let me know through my blog :) thankyouuuu

You are such an inspiration, I can't thank you enough for that video and this blog post. It's made me realize that there is nothing at all to be ashamed about if you suffer from anxiety, which I have suffered from for about seven years.
    So thank you. :) xx

  132. You're the biggest inspiration ever, yet so pretty! I love you Zoella, and remember to always stay strong! :) I started a blog last year, and only have 9 followers, I try quite hard on it, it's about music, fashion, and lots of DIY beauty products, I have 2 great writers which write on the blog. 133. I don't suffer with anxiety but I've been so scared to properly commit to my blog because I didn't know how the people around me would respond to me doing something like that (I guess I'm just ridiculously shy) but after reading your post about saying yes to more things I've decided to give it a real go and commit to posting more regularly. Thank you Zoe, I don't think I would be doing what I am without reading your blog xxx

  134. That was so brave of you to speak out! I wish more people openly spoke about issues they have as it would turn a lot of "taboo" subjects into conversation opposed to lonely secrets :D
I am really glad you are finding ways too cope, heres to all people overcoming anxiety :D

Thank you so much for your video, just watched it now & it made me really happy. Panic attacks can feel SUPER scary. Plus, a lot of people just don't get it. Anyway… thanks for all this, you rock! It's not always easy to talk about things like this on a blog when everyone only tries to talk about the positive things. xx

  141. You are an amazing woman and Im so happy I found YOU, I'd be really happy If I could ever meet you =) if I ever make it to London I wish we can do so =) You look a lot more happy lately and Its sooooo good too see you like that. Keep your head up and love u tons.

  144. Hi I sent the video you made on to a friend who suffered with panic attacks for years. It was great to get an insight into what it can be like for her and I know she really liked hearing from someone who also had panic attacks and how you managed them.

  145. it's amazing how your videos and blog posts about this have inspired others. I've privately struggled with this for a while now, and lost alot of people I care about because I was unable to be open with them. The way that you've shared your personal experiences and the response that you've had, gives me hope. Thank you Zoe.

  146. I really loved watching this video as I do get panic attacks myself as well. You inspired me to 'let go' of the problems and not to think about the attacks so much :)

  147. You are so gorgeous, It's so great that you can talk on here about these things, I know it helps me as long as so many others I'm sure to know there are other people out there struggling as well!!

  152. I went somewhere today that I had avoided for the past three months because of your advice. I had a panic attack there three months back, and even though I'd been wanting to go again, I was too afraid. And when I left this afternoon, without having one, I felt so great. Thank you.

  153. Rebecca

I just found your video and it could not have come at a better time. I was feeling so alone tonight. I have had on and off depressive stages for the past four years now, but now I'm acknowledging it and I'm taking the step to get better. I'm trying to say yes more.
It makes me feel so much better knowing that I'm not alone. We see so many people and it looks like they're so happy, but so often we see so little of the real picture. Your talking about your own problems helped me to look at mine and acknowledge that I can make a change. I don't have to let the sadness consume me. So again, thank you, so so much.

I really really admire you and all the things you do. So, once again Zoe, thank you thank you thank you so so so much for writing this and filming the video. Ah writing this whole thing made my shed some tears haha. I hope that you're able to reply to this at one point or even read it all.

I want you to know that it has really helped me a lot. I've been dealing with anxiety for a year now, and when I read your post (and then watched your video) I realized that, what I was feeling every time I was standing at a bus/tube stop or simply waiting for someone, was not just a thing with me being obsessive with punctuality; it was a little bit more serious than I thought before. I wanted to thank you, because it made me think that I can try to live a normal life. God bless you much more than you blessed me with what you did. Ily.

  192. honestly this video has helped me SO much, growing up with a disability everything just gets overwhelming. I didn't want to do anything but stay in bed & not move! it really encouraged me to start doing different things going out with friends more often being surround lots of people, thats when i decided to start making youtube videos because I think this will help me so much. i know i can get really rude & disrespectful comments but it's something i now will help me become stronger!

your one of my favourite youtuber's and i love watching your videos!

  196. Hi, i discovered your blog earlier on today while i was at work and wanted to come back and read it tonight as i could really relate and understand how hard it must have been blogging about a personal issue. i suffer with anxiety, over the last 1 or 2 years it has developed and i'd find myself panicking over the silliest things, luckily i'm getting over it now. I've just tonight started my own blog, i think i found you inspiring lol.. http://antoniaapril.blogspot.co.uk/ X

  198. I recently had my first ever panic attack, I had watched your video on anxiety and panic attacks way before I had my first panic attack, you really helped me because the whole duration of it I was thinking 'Think of what zoe said' it really helped my and got me through the whole thing!
I'm a little worried though because I'm worried about having one when I go back to school, also I'd love to know, is it normal to feel that your of a shortness of breath and that your heart speeds up when you're lead down? At night when I'm about to go to sleep I will lay down and and I cannot breath or my heart beat will speed up so now I have to sleep with about 9 pillows or I have to sleep sitting up,
    any advise? xxx

Hi! First of all, I wanted to tell you that I'm 15 years old, and I suffer from panic attacks and axiety. I have been suffering this since I was like 8 or 9 years old. Because of people at school bullied me, I didn't wanted to go to school or even go out of my home.
This video and this post really helped me to finally go to a friend's party. It was my first party with more than 3 friends.
I used to refuse go out for a walk, go party or even meet new people, because I was so scared of what they might think of me. Last year I was in a café when a guy came and asked me if I liked to drink something and I panic, because I didn't know what to do, like I thought "Should I run away?" Then he started making fun of me, and I started getting very very nervous. I asked a friend who was with me, if she could leave with me, but she told me to stay there because it was just a joke. At the minute she said that, I run away and did not appeared for like two hours.
I am also very scared of meeting with people in any public place, because I have the feeling that someone's watching me. The day of the joke, was my first day out with friends. And since then I haven't gone out, but two days ago I saw this video and it really changed my mind.

Zoe, thank you for being so honest. I can only imagine how vulnerable posting this video to the world might have felt. Being someone who has only recently started dealing with anxiety and panic attacks I feel somewhat relieved to know I'm not the only one. Thanks for your bravery and kindness. You're an inspiration to us all!x

Zoe how do I know if I have panic attacks? I’ve begun had symptoms of anxiety and sometimes i get all claustrophobic and cry without reason. It’s really uncomfortable.

I’ve also written a blog post about it, could you maybe read it and tell me if you think it could be anxiety / panic attacks?

I don’t usually follow your blog (I follow both your YouTube channels) and i wish you so much luck, happiness and hugs for the future years to come. You must of had so much courage to talk about your anxiety, my friend used to have panic attacks and got really scared over the little things but could easily hurdle over the big things. She got over that by always looking around, looking for the brighter sides to life all the time and having that grand support from friends and family. Anyone can get over anything put your mind to it and always be optimistic! keep smiling and loving what you do! I send you lots and lots of hugs!! Xxxx ps: I would love it if you read this xxxxxxx
